We come across them everyday, they’re in our neighborhoods, our parks, even our own backyards.  Helping to take care of, and protect Windsor’s wildlife, is what Wings Rehabilitation Centre is all about.  Wings Rehab Centre is a non-profit organization, committed to caring for orphaned and injured wildlife species in the area.  To celebrate wildlife week, Wings Rehab Centre held a presentation at the Windsor Essex County Humane Society at 2pm Sunday afternoon.

The event, hosted by Wings Centre President Nancy Phillips, included live wildlife species, as well as information on how to get involved.  She says it’s important to make people aware of how you can work and live with wildlife.  “Education is very important to us, to make people aware, respect, and appreciate wildlife,” said Phillips.  Part of that education is teaching people what species are in their neighbourhood. Helping them to learn how to deal with those species, the habitat and food they need, and how to care for your property without harming the animals.

Those looking to help erase the footprint of some of the negative impact human interaction has had on Windsor’s wildlife can take the first step by volunteering.  According to Phillips, the organization has 104 volunteers, not including a few new ones.  There’s a number of volunteer opportunities, from providing a temporary home, being an emergency driver, fostering an animal, volunteering at the clinic, as well as opportunities for students and pre-teen volunteers.  Those looking to get involved who are more timid around animals don’t need to shy away from helping out.  They can do such activities as assisting with fund raising, doing the animal laundry, or helping to prepare the food.

Phillips says becoming a part of the organization is a great opportunity for volunteers, not only to get a deeper respect for the animals that surround us, but to learn team work as well.  “This gives them an opportunity to work within the community and help the community,” she said.  Phillips says you’re not always just helping animals, but helping other people as well.  The Wings Rehabilitation Centre is located at 5281 Middle Side Road, Amherstburg.  For more information visit the centre’s website.
