The Colosseum at Caesar’s Windsor was packed last night as Trans Siberian Orchestra took the stage. A lot of people might be thinking “why would anyone go see a Christmas show in April?” It seems a lot of folks are unaware that TSO actually has two non-holiday releases, and this tour is in support of one of those.

The album is called “Beethoven’s Last Night” and was released in 2000. Last night was the second show of the North American leg of the tour, and the second year that this show has run. The album is conceptual and tells the story of composer Ludwig van Beethoven and his run-in with Mephistopheles, where he is offered the choice between death or having his music removed from the world forever.

The story is told through the music as well as a narrator, and as would be expected of any rock opera, the performance is accompanied by an impressive show. Lasers, fire, lights, smoke, and choreographed dancing all timed to go off perfectly with music that is already beautifully arranged and performed make for quite an experience.

The audience last night got right into the performance, breaking into thunderous applause at the end of each song, clapping along to the heavier tracks, and getting to their feet as the music overwhelmed them. Listening to conversations as everyone flocked to the doors at the close of the show, it seemed everyone was pleased with what they had seen, whether they were die-hard TSO fans who attend the Christmas performance every year, or someone who before that night had only ever heard “Carol of The Bells” on the radio. I guess when you blend metal and classical, fire and lasers, you really can’t go wrong.
