Ever wondered how you can make Windsor a better place to live?  Want to help move the city forward?  Want to be a part of the decision-making process?

Then consider this… city council will soon be accepting applications for agencies, boards, commissions and committees of council for the 2011-2014 term of office starting on Monday, March 7, 2011.

Applications will be available online, or in print at Customer Care Centres and at the Office of the City Clerk, 350 City Hall Square West, Room 203.  The deadline to submit your application is Friday, March 18, 2011.

The Mandate of Council Committees is:

  • The mandate of the individual Board, Committee or Commission is generally prescribed in the statute for statuatory bodies, or in City Council resolutions.  If there is uncertainty as to the role of the Committee, the Coordinator should be consulted to provide copies of the official authority.
  • With the exception of several “management” committees such as the Windsor Tunnel Commission or Transit Windsor Board of Directors (duties and authority prescribed in statute), Committees are advisory only, i.e. they provide recommendations to City Council on policies applicable to a specific function.  This is important to note, because under the present form of local government, administrative staff are responsible to City Council through the Chief Administrative Officer, and not responsible to the Committee or its members for the operation of a particular function.

There are a variety of committees to take part in, from the Windsor-Essex County Environment Committee to the Windsor Heritage Committee, Seniors Advisory Committee and the Windsor Bicycling Committee. To see a full list of the council committees you can participate in, visit the city’s website.
