This week at Artspeak Gallery is an exhibition of three local artists. A. G. Smith, Barbara Murawski and Elaine Carr will all show artworks in an exhibit entitled “The Water Narratives”.

The exhibition is described as follows:

Water is an intrinsic part of life, especially for those of us who live on the shores of the Great Lakes Waterway.  Everything we do, every journey we make is referenced to water.  Water is the background narrative to our lives. Water has been at the centre of the story of this country from its earliest history.

Beyond being an absolute necessity for life, water has meaning in all of our lives. To a fisher it is a source of livelihood. To a sailor it is a highway of endless possibilities. To a poet and an artist it is a subject of contemplation and reflection.

In this Exhibition three artists explore their personal and cultural relationship with water. In Elaine Carr’s work, water and land is shown from different perspectives, which exist simultaneously, are mediated by memory and transformed. For A.G. Smith, being near the water and on the water and building the vessels that make that possible have always been important in his life. In Barbara Murawskiʼs work, a play with water images and water idioms, endeavours to stimulate a sense of commonality with the viewer.

“The Water Narratives” runs from March 27th until April 9th at Art Speak, located at located at 1942 Wyandotte Street East.  Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm and on Saturdays from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

The opening reception is Friday, April 1st from 7:00pm until 11:00 pm.
