A buzz of the razor vibrates and there is a collective gasp as the hair falls. While we watch a brave moment in this man’s life we are all reminded of why we are here today. Frank Duke and Thierry Da-Silva are the owners of U4ia Hair Salon in Windsor. They have organized the event two years in the making so others struggling with cancer may benefit.
The room is filled with the sound of music as well as the chatter of people collected together for one cause. The mood in the room is jubilant and it’s not because of the free flowing wine compliments of Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery. It’s because you find yourself surrounded by people who are in love with finding a cure for cancer.
Great food and wine, entertainment in the form of a fashion show sponsored by FREEDS clothing and musical talent Joel Liburdi, most known for his lead performance in Windsor’s own RENT. An awe-inspiring performance that was so electrifying it left me with goose bumps. The famous Top 10 Reasons Why Frank Should Shave His Head also arrived from The David Letterman Show via fax.
Cancer affects everyone. It’s rare these days to find anyone who hasn’t been affected by cancer whether personally or through someone close. As Keith White of FREEDS so eloquently pointed out, “Cancer doesn’t care whom it picks to be the next client.” In this room you can find hope. Over $5579 was raised for Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation. Hair, donated by Frank Duke and Melissa Renaud for Angel Hair for Kids, a children’s organization who provide wigs for children affected by cancer.
Frank is gladly giving up hair he has been growing for the past few years to provide a child who is apprehensive about losing their hair a wig. It’s very clear how much the event meant to the participants as the pieces of Frank’s hair were auctioned off. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
For those of you still dying to know the number one answer in David Letterman’s Top 10 Reasons Why Frank Should Shave His Head: Because Frank, you simply look like a wanker!
