“Our Captain Forever”- Spits Comeback to 7-5 Victory Over Plymouth

Last night at the WFCU Center, the Windsor Spitfires honored their “Captain Forever”, Mickey Renaud, with a pregame ceremony.  All displays in the arena in someway shape or form were set to his number, 18.  Mickey’s parents received his Calgary Flames jersey(from the summer training camp) from the Spitfires on behalf of Ryan Ellis.  Current Spitfires President Bob Boughner also delivered a touching speech on the jumbotron.

Surprisingly, the Spit’s choose to start Johnny Cullen in net.  After a loss on Wednesday most assumed Campbell would start because they were playing a “win-and-you’re-in” goalie strategy.  Stephen Johnston scored an early goal for the Spits halfway through the first period, leaving the game 1-0 Spits going into the second.

In the second period Plymouth’s Livingston added a goal, but Alexander Khokhlachev and Kenny Ryan added a pair of goals late in the second period giving the Spits a 3-1 lead going into the third.  John Cullen suffered an injury during the second period and Jack Campbell took over for the rest of the game.  It was rumored he was being checked out for a concussion, but it was later announced he is fine, but won’t be returning to the bench for the rest of the game.

In the third period things got very heated.  Plymouth was able to bounce back with four straight goals making it 5-3 Plymouth with just six minutes of play left.  Windsor put fourth one of their strongest efforts this season I have witnessed and was able to comeback with three goals scored by Brown, Ellis and Carnevale.  The crowd went nuts!  With one minute left of play, Taylor Carnevale scored the final empty net goal to seal the deal.

Tomorrow night, the Spits will take on the Whalers again on the road in Plymouth at 7:05 PM.
