Council Asked to spend $900,000 to Host Children’s Games in 2013

On Monday evening, City Council will receive a report authored by Mayor Eddie Francis asking council to allocate $300,000.00 for three years totalling $900,000.00 for the purpose of hosting the International Children’s Games (ICG) in 2013.  This money will come out of the yearly capitol budget.

The preliminary budget for hosting the ICG is estimated between $2 million and $2.5 million.  The primary expense to host the games will be accommodations, meals and transpiration needs, and that is estimated to cost in the area of $1,322,563.00.  Other costs such as banners, entertainment, security, opening and closing ceremony costs is estimated to cost $553,000.00  In-kind donations from Police, Fire, EMS, and city staffing will cost $165,000.00

A request has been made to Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island for $200,000.00 and Essex county Council has also been asked for $6000, 000.00 over the next three years.  Several fund raising efforts are also planed over the next two years.

A Summer Games Host Committee will also be established with Mayor Francis and Warden Bain as joint Co-Chairs.

This year the ICG Winter Games will be held in Kelowna from January 26th-31st.  The city will be sending Councillor Dilkens to represent the Mayor, as well Nora Romero from the Mayor’s Office and Gordon Orr from the Communications Department.
