Bump Maternity + Baby was only open for one day when disaster struck.

On June 6th — the same day Leamington was struck by a Tornado and Art in the Park suffered a devastating flood — Lindsay Hulkkonen arrived at her business’ brand new Walkerville location to find severe damage, a collapsed ceiling and a buckling, hundred-year-old wooden floor.

Hulkkonen, whose business began on Erie Street in 2007 specializes in Canadian-made, all natural and innovative products for expecting mothers and those with infants, was heartbroken to find her newly renovated store reduced to pieces, and her products full of water.  During the previous night’s storm, high winds that crippled the Windsor Essex area tore off her rooftop’s drain cover, blowing a propane tank into the spout and leaving feet of water on the flat roof.

When that water broke through, the damage begun.  “There were a few feet of water on the roof which in turn penetrated the ceiling and caused part of our ceiling to come down and the rest was basically raining in to the store!” described Hulkkonen to windsoriteDOTca.

Now, two months after the incident, and nearly $100,000 in repairs, Bump Maternity + Baby is ready for a grand re-reopening this weekend.

“I think we appeal to young couples because we try to find new products and offer things that are unique to the area. Our furniture focuses on design and are pieces that can grow with the child or be used elsewhere in the home. We are excited for some great new products that we have coming in this fall as part of our stroller and baby item line up!” said Hulkkonen, full of spirit and perseverance.

Bump does baby shower and gift registries and even creates custom gifts baskets.

The store is having a small opening reception tonight for friends and family, but returns to regular hours tomorrow morning starting at 10am.  Stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood or need a great gift for an expectant mother.  Bump will be open between 10-6 Saturday and 11-2 Sunday and will have some special activities including face painting, a candy buffet and a gift basket raffle.

Bump Maternity + Baby is located at 1719 Wyandotte St. East.  You can find them on the web at www.bumpmaternityonline.com
