Windsor’s garbage collection is moving from alleys to front yards soon. What do you think about this?

Windsor’s garbage collection will be moving from alleys to front yards in the coming weeks, according to a notice of motion from Monday’s City Council meeting.  The City’s rationale is that newer garbage trucks are unable to fit down Windsor’s alleys.

    If that's the case, I would expect to see a lot of alley closings over the next couple of years.

    I LOVE alley pickup! This is where all the “business” end of running a household used to take place; deliveries, pick-ups, all our garages face the alley. The streetside of the houses were the “face” of your neighbourhood, and you wanted them to look the best they could.

    So, by “supersizing” the garbage trucks, presumably in response to the gargantuan quantities of refuse we're throwing out, we're losing yet another vestige of civil life. Ugh…

    We've had street pickup for years and if there's one thing I hate it's the site of garbage all over the street after dinnertime, once a week.

    I completely agree Chris. Having lived with an alley all my life, I will sorely miss the charm of “behind the scenes”, the “big bad alley” where only the garbage vultures roam. I've too always pictured streets and neighbourhoods as an established theatre, with work room for the playhands (municipal services), the stage (house) and the audience (street). In any normal production (and I use the theatre analogy in the most sincerest of ways), you wouldn't have set crafters performing their roles in the view of the audience, so why should we settle for the destruction of the play by allowing unsightly stagecraft to go on in front of our precious tributes to our neighbourhoods!

    I knew this day was coming, especially when the practice of glorifying our garages (vs gardens, lawns, porches and paths) took hold of our immediate front yards in newly developed areas. Will we ever get the alleys of our lives back?
