They’ve done it again!
The Windsor Spitfires swiftly swept the Barrie Colts to win their second consecutive Ontario Hockey League Championship, Tuesday night at the WFCU Centre.
With a game that started out in Barrie’s favour (1 – 0), the Spitfires battled with strength and fortitude to score back-to-back, five-on-three goals by the second period.
In the third period, the spirit in the WFCU Centre was euphoric. The Spitfires transformed their lead to 5-2 as showers of give-away towels rained down on the ice. In the final minutes, champion and star player, Taylor Hall netted the game winner, and a roar of applause, cheers and ecstacy filled the arena.
The Spitfires swept the Barrie Colts, who ironically, swept every other team they faced in the playoffs.
Within minutes, the J. Ross Robertson trophy was on ice, being carried by players who have enjoyed its presence for a year, and will continue to do so until at least May 2011.
The Spits head to Brandon Manitoba to play in the Memorial Cup tournament, a championship they are expected to win with even greater ease than that of last year.
