Oishii Sushi Bar and the University of Windsor captured top honours at the 2010 Big Brothers Big Sisters Windsor/Essex Battle of the Hors d’Oeuvres at the Ciociaro Club on Friday night.

The event, now in its 24th year, is a culinary competition between local restaurants and catering facilities.  An expert judging panel consisting of Windsor Culinary Guild president Ahron Goldman, Retired NHL Goalie Eddie Mio, WindsorEats’s Pina Ciotoli and the Windsor Star’s Ted Whipp were presented with specially prepared creations.

Local restaurants Per Bacco, Oishii, Pho Saigon and Caldwell’s Grant participated in the Restaurant Category, with Oishii winning the Critic’s Choice Award for their wrapped-in-soy-paper, “Essex County Sushi” creation.

The University of Windsor beat out competitor Caesars Windsor to win the Hospitality Critic’s Choice Award for their “One Bite Surf & Turf”, and Century High took the High School category by storm to win the Critic’s Choice Award for their “Chicken Pate Crustini”.

I love the concept of Hors d'Oeuvres in a little cardboard box. That just adds a sense of humour to the whole thing.
There are so many positives here. My only real “comment” or make that “suggestion” here would be to the local television stations: This would be a perfect chance to make some fantastic local programming, which could well be original enough to go national. CanCon, with clout! Why aren't we doing this? Just remember where you heard the idea. :)
Whatever happened to local programming anyway?

Heh, the local media rarely even pay attention to anything local, that's why windsoriteDOTca is here!

I agree with you. I'm just seeing something like this putting Windsor on the map a little bit more. I suppose the idea is just ripping-off “Iron Chef” or similar shows. But, this is a big event. We have two local stations with the equipment to record this. It'd have to be edited to an hour or less, I suppose. Even so, “Windsor/Essex Battle of the Hors d’Oeuvres” is something I think people would want to watch. Local reality-based programming that could well sell elsewhere.
Maybe I'm just going pie in the sky (Hors d’Oeuvre in the sky?) here? I'm just thinking about exposure, to get investment in Windsor. Sometimes you have to do something different, and put yourself out there. We're here and doing this, not just some lunch bucket town. We keep asking the government for help, which is all well and good, but sometimes you have to help yourself too.
