The University of Windsor is facing a parking crisis now that construction of the Center for Engineering Innovation [CEI] has begun.
Student Michael Szarka has started an online petition aimed to convince University of Windsor administration to reconsider their options with regards to student parking.
The concerns of petitioners are outlined in a description, an excerpt of which reads
“Parking for students has now become a nightmare with a limited amount of spots. Students were not informed at the beginning of the year of any plans to close the lot; rather we were informed in November – 3 months into the fall semester.”
Construction of the Centre for Engineering Innovation has enveloped an entire city block of student parking — an estimated 400 spaces — while students have been redirected to new, smaller lots, located at times twice the distance from the main campus.
At an open house for the CEI in December, representatives for the Windsor West Homeowners Association voiced their concerns to University officials about a continual plan by the University to create parking lots on sites of former homes in the area. Options for a parking garage on campus have been all but dismissed as too cost prohibitive.
The petition for remediation of the current parking crisis at the University includes suggestions such as permitting students to utilize half-empty faculty and staff lots, and implementation of a more thorough communication system for lot closures in the future.
