The following is a guest article written for us by Mike Beauchamp:

I just read that Rick Prelinger will be showing archival films about Detroit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit and it’s free!

The presentation is called “Films from Prelinger Archives: Lost Landscapes of Detroit” and it’s happening on Wednesday, 10 February at 7PM. More information can be found at http://www.mocadetroit.org/

Rick Prelinger runs one of my favourite websites, called the Prelinger Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger) which is an amazing collection of old public domain films that are freely available for download. If you haven’t seen this website, go now and exploit your uncapped internet!

I have spent hours watching Jam Handy commercials, and thanks to the Prelinger archive I am also fully prepared for possible nuclear attack.

If you are interested in seeing what Detroit used to be, instead of obsessing over what it’s become (http://www.viceland.com/int/v16n8/htdocs/something-something-something-detroit-994.php) then this show is definitely worth checking out! Rick has also promised that the show will be free of the “ruins porn that’s become fashionable”.

If you go, please tell him I said thanks for the Prelinger Archives. If he’s a nice guy, tell him I have an animated short called “Up is Down” on 16mm colour that is reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange if he’s interested.

If he’s really nice, you can also tell him that I stole the reel from my high school.
