The University of Windsor’s new Centre for Engineering Innovation will begin to take shape at the corner of California and Wyandotte West. as construction begins ‘within weeks’.

At a public open house, Tuesday night, representatives from the University of Windsor’s Facilities Services, along with B+H Architects’ designers, detailed the plan to construct the new LEED Certified engineering school in two phases.

The first phase will see the construction of the industrial courtyard, which connects numerous laboratories and testing facilities with an open-form courtyard for private research partnerships.

The second phase, to be completed for March 2012, will include classrooms, lecture halls, offices, the grand atrium and a food court.

The new academic facility is valued at $110 million dollars, and will be constructed to meet the Gold level of  Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Take a look at more 3D drawings of the project here.

Inspired by the U of W’s new logo I made THESE: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_2&listing_id=36512650

Yes – that logo is so incredibly lame. Still can’t believe it exists.

It looks great, but why the giant expanse of parking instead of a parking structure? How is a giant parking lot part of award-winning environmental design? We only have to look at 2 of the other corners of this intersection to find acres more of parking.

Yes, parking is quite the issue, as is the state of rental properties in west windsor. I spoke to representatives from the West Windsor Homeowners Association last night — saving that for an upcoming article.

It’s probably cost prohibitive to building a parking structure without raising the rates for students. But a new parking garage would definitely help alleviate the situation around the University. They could also add ground floor student services (restaurants, book store, coffee shop etc.) and tie the structure into the environmentally friendly engineering building.
