walkale

Popular Walkerville establishment, The Kildare House, closed its doors and ended an era of good times, celtic entertainment and great eats over the weekend.

According to my source at WindsorEats.com, the Kildare House — at the corner of Kildare Rd. and Wyandotte E. and housed in a building that was constructed in 1885 — officially ceased operations as of first thing Monday morning.

    Why? :(

My condolences to Heath, et al. A fun place with good food and great beers. Hopefully this is only temporary.

A good time is always had at The Kildare – lets try and get together and keep one of Windsor’s LAST real Irish pubs alive! :(

We’ve lost so many great businesses already and this will continue to happen. It’s hard for stores and restaurants to weather this economic storm…especially since it’s a long one.

K, now where are we supposed to go? Where will St Patrick’s Day celebrations be held? This is gay.

Wow, that is extremely disappointing. That place has some cool memories from my high school/University days. I do remember it was for sale a while back, unfortuantely like so many things in our area it just couldn’t last.

The end of an era of “ceol agus craic”, to be sure. I’ve been a participant for most of the past seven years in Clare Renaud’s Tuesday night session. While not all of the memories have been cheery ones, most of them (for me, at least) have been so. To be sure, I’ll miss the sight of “Kit” behind the bar, watching patiently for the nod of your head to bring you another pint of some of the best Guinness in town. I’ll miss the decor, the regulars, the sweltering heat in the summer that the stupid ceiling fan did nothing to relieve! But most of all, I’ll miss the “ceol agus craic”, the music and the good fellowship, that for so many of us was a hallmark of those years of Kildare Tuesday nights. Tuesdays will never, I fear, be the same in Windsor.

i don’t think the current economy had too much to do with the closing. i heard it was the property taxes that were hurting them…. $14,000 a year for the building and parking lot!! This city is brutal on small business owners and people like Docherty (owner of the hole next to the hilton on riverside that was finally filled in but not at his expense!) can get away without spending their millions in back taxes for years.

I have to agree with ya. Small businesses in Windsor are taken for every last cent by the taxman eh.

    • John

$14k in taxes alone? Holy crap! That’s a lot of Guinness…

  • Kari

This is devastating… honestly, a small part of me died when I heard this. Can someone please quickly buy it and maintain the greatness that is the Kildare!

I know I’m late to this conversation. I went every few months or so over from Detroit. I kept going even after the exchange rate fell apart. It was awesome. Kildare and Ryans are both gone… man, what’s left?

Actually, as of about two weeks ago, the Kildare House has reopened. New ownership and new styles, but now back in business. Patty O’Ryan’s is completely gone, now a brand new bank sits on the site. Mick’s Irish Pub however is a new venue right around the block from O’Ryans.
