Thirty-eight hours and sixteen minutes was all it took for a new chapter to unfold in CJAM FM’s twenty-six year history — that’s the time that elapsed between station sign off from 91.5 FM on Monday, and the first broadcast on the new 99.1 FM……
Wednesday morning in Windsor began with extreme winds that blew trees into roads, through the roofs of cars and into the roads, but that didn’t deter the engineers from Grundy Telcom Integration from completing the installation of CJAM’s new antenna.
First things first: on the roof of Laurier Hall at the University of Windsor, Grundy Telcom Integration owner Brian Grundy (left) guides the first part of CJAM’s new antenna up the side of the roof while Grundy’s Devin Millen (right) hoists the 150 lb copper structure.
Dan O’Hoski (left) and Colin Costello (right) quickly attach the first part of the antenna to the mast.
In no time at all, the second piece is in place…
…and bolted together.
By the early afternoon, the last step for the antenna up on Laurier’s roof is to connect the cables that run to the transmitter room.
At 1pm, it’s all done up on the roof.
Testing begins on the new antenna that is specifically tuned to broadcast on 99.1 MHz. The reconfigured transmitter unit appears in the background.
At 2pm, inspectors from Industry Canada arrive and confirm that CJAM is ready to broadcast!
Down at CJAM’s studio in the basement of the CAW Student Centre, Music Director Chris White, Program Director Cassandra Caverhill and host of Braille Radio Angela Desjardins ceremoniously together press the button that will launch CJAM’s first broadcast from their new signal at 99.1 FM!!!
And CJAM goes live with a new station ID and a song by Windsor Band, What Seas What Shores! Listen to the first broadcast here:
Cassandra Caverhill (left) and Chris White (right) prepare to break in and welcome CJAM listeners back.
Angela Desjardins and Cassandra Caverhill grin as 99.1 FM is live!
Congratulations CJAM and especially Station Manager L. Adam Fox on the new frequency, protected status and a solid future for community radio in Windsor!
