The McHugh Street extension between what’s called the “East Riverside Planning Area” and the WFCU Centre, opened last week with the unveiling of a new bridge over Little River.
Unlike the often-dubbed “Bridge to Nowhere” over Little River on Wyandotte Street, the new McHugh St. bridge sets this neighbourhood up to become a strangely significant traffic passageway — with this extension being the only direct thoroughfare between Lauzon Parkway and Lesperance Rd. in Tecumseh, aside from Tecumseh Road or Riverside Drive.
The bridge was part of a plan dating back to 2004 (pg. 44) for an extension of McHugh Street around the Lear Plant’s lands, and into the East Riverside Planning Area.
It is however somewhat strange to have a four lane arterial road entering a proposed residential neighbourhood. Hopefully, the only congestion that results because of this road will be before and after Windsor Spitfires games, or else residents may be fuming over fumes!
