Saturdays, for the next little while, I’ll be examining some sites of urban and rural decay in and around the Windsor-Essex area.
Essex County is sure known for its agricultural roots. With one of the longest growing seasons in Canada, we’ve woven within our boundaries a lattice of crop-farms serving the grain, maize and soybean industries. But livestock farming is another, smaller fragment of agriculture here in Essex County.
At the eastern periphery of Essex, an old – what I presume was a hog farm, sits adjoined to a roadside.
Two rows of housing for animals sit together in parallel.
Inside, low ceilings suggest that this place was a dwelling for small animals once long ago.
The wreckage of an old NAVISTAR vehicle sits near the animal lodging.
A wooden mast supports the remains of a tall lamp.
Fencing previously used as a stockade to keep the animals from drifting.
Deep water pits on the site make a beautiful rendering of nature reclaiming the area.
Just a short chapter in Essex County’s agricultural history.
