In a good turn of events for the Windsor area, the Windsor Spitfires are poised to capture the Ontario Hockey League title, and the J. Ross Robertson Cup, this Friday in Windsor at the WFCU Centre (a feat they have not achieved since 1988!).

Photographed from the catwalk at Windsor’s new arena, the OHL Championship series logo beneath the ice, illustrates the Cup which will be presented on ice to the winning team.

Many people often confuse the “Memorial Cup” with the J. Ross Robertson Cup.  The Memorial Cup is actually a round-robin tournament to determine the best Junior hockey team in all of Canada, with competitors including the champions of the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major-Junior Hockey League.  This year’s Memorial Cup series will be played later this month in Rimouski, Quebec, and the Spitfires are very close to being included in that tournament!

The Spitfires are 3-1 in this series, and only need one more win to be OHL Champions.  Go Windsor!!

I saw some of your WFCU/Spits pictures on Flickr – they are quite striking, well done. I am an ex-Windsorite living elsewhere in Southern Ontario now and have been following the Spits’ march to the OHL Championship and hopefully a Memorial Cup. I’d love to include a photo or two of yours on my blog http://www.heroesinrehab.ca, with attribution of course. You can reach me at junior(at)heroesinrehab.ca
