White, non Albino Squirrel

White, non-albino squirrels are apparently found in a few select locations in North America. In Exeter, ON, for example, white squirrels are all over the place.

Strangely, this little buddy, shot in Lakeshore, ON, is nowhere near Exeter. These squirrels with unique coats are the apparent result of a genetic mutation according to this wikipedia entry.  Now, wish I had these in my backyard in Windsor.

i wonder what caused the mutation.

I don’t know, but I do know that Laura and I practically went squirrel hunting today. She tells me squirrels threatened your life in the past!

omg yeah, one totally did. i was taking pictures of one in my backyard and it was screaming at me and almost lunged down from the tree as i was taking a video. i jumped back because i thought it was going to kill me D:

I’ve seen one in Kingston….it ate our cooler.

That is a very cute leucistic squirrel. Ok I admit it I think squirrels are cute in general. But right now I wouldn’t mind killing the ones that are currently building nests in the attic and my bedroom wall.

    I really hate squirrels too.

When I was about 8 or 9, I was in my back yard playing under a tree with my brother and our friend, and my brother started being a jerk and hitting this tree, and for some reason a squirrel fell out and landed on my head and was making screaming noises and wouldnt get off.

It was terrifying. Guess it wasn’t the squirrels fault,….but

Then a similar situation happened again about 2 years later, except I was on a bike, annnnd it just fell out of a tree on to me.

    Just my luck.

While it is true that these run rampant in Exeter, the population has declined as there have been some who have actually been trapping and removing them

“i wonder what caused the mutation.”

    Jesus.

i hate squirrels too. I’ve also had bad experiences. One would crawl on the screens of the windows and doors of my cottage up north and pee on them, i guess marking it’s territory? We weren’t feeding it or anything. When we went outside it usually came to attack us. it was holding us hostage pretty much. my dad kicked it really hard and it went flying, the little bastard survived and ran up a tree to the closest branch to my dad’s head and just yelled at him. It was a red squirrel though, those things are evil. all squirrels are evil and scary.

also: the idea of white squirrels really freaks me out, because they will be camouflaged in the winter by the snow :S

    HAHAHA he kicked it hHAHAHAHA

I grew up in a neighbourhood in Lakeshore where we always had a white squirrel. Many years later I saw a wildlife photographer taking some shots. One is usually found in the area in Belle River a few streets west of the river.
