So Thursday night, the Windsor Spitfires played their first game at the new WFCU Centre in east Windsor.  As well, the building was given a special grand opening ceremony by various notable names from the area.  Apologies to Windsor Visuals readers, I had said I would’ve had these up sometime during the day Friday, but I had hundreds of photos to go through and edit.  And whew, it’s all done now!  Hit read more for 40-something more photos!

I seriously cut off the zamboni by putting together this shot.

The fans begin to pour in, after major traffic delays.

The ceremonies begin, and BOMBER drops down from the ceiling.

RCAF Honour Guard.

City Councillor Alan Halberstad.  He was boo’d.  I’m not sure why.  He’s a great guy!

Pete Dobrich speaks on behalf of the Spits.

Mayor Eddie Francis speaks.

The teams skate out, and assemble for the national anthem.

Singing of O’ Canada, Francis dons a jersey.

Francis drops the ceremonial puck.

The ‘real’ first faceoff at the WFCU Centre.

Annnnnnnnd they’re off!

Out in the corner.

Spitfires Captain, Harry Young.

The home depot intermission blimp!  This thing is better than a kite.

The stands clear, and everyone heads to the concessions for hotdogs served on hamburger buns!  I can’t complain, mine was damn skippy good.

This father and his son were waving to me to take their picture!

Watch out Murphy, Mitchell is one to look out for.

Unfortunately, this did not go in.

Huh, what?  Where’s the puck?!

Oh no you dih-dunt!

WHAM!

AND…. the consequences.  :(

The rink is packed!

Obligitory WFCU Centre shot.

Yes, I was up on the catwalk.  Yes, it was high up.  Yes, I held onto my lenses for dear life.

The rafter’s bone’s connected to the, catwalk bone!

RIP Mickey Renaud.

Second intermission.

These kids kept yelling, “HAY, take our pitchaaz!”.

Gleeson covers it up.

Spits Goalie, Stephen Gleeson.

“Pile up? Hey why the hell not!”

Belleville did shine this time, sadly for Windsor’s sake.  Mike Murphy was on his game.

Strategic defense.

There’s that blimp again!

The lattice of girders holding up the ceiling.. and incidentally, the very catwalk on which I was standing.

Belleville won this one, 4-0.

And lastly, my vantage point… yikes.

For the rest of the photos, here they are all in a set on my flickr!

Excellent pics. Must have been fun. The blimp is from Home Hardware not Home Depot.

Just to let you know, in ref to the RCAF Honour Guard…we are not called the RCAF anymore. We are called Canadian Forces Air Command (AIRCOM), also known as the Canadian Air Force, is the air force element of the Canadian Forces. After 1968, the RCAF was merged with the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Navy to form the Canadian Forces, and air force functions were divided up and placed into several new commands. Just thought you would like to know. Great photos……rnrnrn
